Chatswood Station

History

Chatswood station was opened, along with the North Shore railway line on 1 January 1890. An island platform was built on 23 May 1900 and a third "local" platform brought into use on 12 July 1919. The first electric train ran through Chatswood on 15 August 1927, with full electric passenger service commencing 27 October 1928. At one time there was a goods siding at the station and before 1958 there was a tram terminus in Victoria Avenue beside the station.

The station will be the eastern junction of the new Epping Chatswood Railway (ECR) due to be completed mid-2008. To accommodate the new line the original station, as well as the attached bus interchange and shopping centre, has undergone complete demolition which started in 2005.

Chatswood Transport Interchange construction siteThe new station will become part of the Chatswood Transport Interchange (CTI) and will consist of two island platforms. As part of construction the platform 3 was demolished and a temporary island platform was created in its place. The original island platform was demolished and a new western island platform opened and made ready for revenue service on 16 October 2006. Upon opening the western side the temporary facilities were demolished and construction began on the eastern platform.

When fully complete in 2008 the station will be part of the larger CTI complex which will consist of the station, a bus interchange, the new shopping plaza Metro Chatswood and 3 towers. Metro Chatswood will serve next door to Lemon Grove and Westfield Chatswood.
