剧情介绍

版本一

影片的主人公是由威利·维吉斯扮演的大学生，他来到了一个超现实的幻境中。他身处的这座城市好像是奥斯汀，但日常生活的规律和秩序似乎完全被打破了。

他从一个地方游荡到另一个地方，不断遇到稀奇古怪的人。最有意思的是他遇见的这些人都在谈论一些宏大高深的话题：从量子论到语言的起源，从存在主义到人的转世再生，从自由意志的荒谬到电影作为一种叙事工具，他陷入一场接着一场的对话中。

他极力想知道自己究竟处在梦境中，还是处于清醒中。但最终他只是发现自己不断苏醒，又不断重新坠入梦境中。他无法摆脱这接二连三地涌现的梦，开始逐渐理解梦的含义，并试着控制梦和周围的环境，分辨苏醒的人生与梦中人生的区别……

版本二

主角怀利·威金斯童年时期得到了“梦就是命运”的谶语，长成为大学生后，时而坐在奔驰的火车上，时而在床上辗转反侧。这两个镜头贯穿在整部影片中，似乎象征着他的人生历程及若梦若醒的状态。他在“梦境”中遭遇了十多个身份各异的人，每人都阐述了人生的一大原理。

本片用大段独白或对白来表达哲理命题，像是一堂堂大学课程的节选，而剧情构思和人物塑造被推到极次要的地位。这些人说了许多或许能打开心结、或许更令人困惑的观点，也提出了许多似是而非的问题，如：“恐惧和懒惰，哪样是人类最普遍的特点？”“人们说，梦只要不停止，那就是真实的；那么，人生不也可以这么看？”本片的制作不同于一般卡通片。编导先用真人真景一场场拍好，剪辑妥当，然后请了30多人利用电脑把画面变成卡通。影片色彩被简化，线条和色块像波浪一样蠕动，如同一个不安分的顽童在调皮捣蛋。
