词条 writing for U 1
释义

When reading, we are in fact decoding what we are reading. But  we usually fail to pay attention to this decoding process that is always at work.

It’s not uncommon that from time to time we are trying to translate—one way of decoding, though—what we are reading into our mother tongue Chinese.

But of course it’s not an acceptable  way of reading .

During the reading process, we keep asking ourselves questions as “What’t the meaning of this word?” “Can I work out the meaning of it with the help of the context?” "It seems I don't like the writer's way of expression, what should I do?"

So, it would be interesting if we just try to record all the questions.

For one thing, we can look back to see what was in our mind during the reading time;for another, it is a good practice of our writing skills.

Most frequently asked questions during this time might be:

•What’s the problem with me when reading this passage?

•Do I really like what I am reading now, why or why not?

•What is the author driving about by saying this?

We also need observant eye to find interesting questions to ask ourselves.

Since we are writing in English, it is important for us to bear in mind that we have to write grammatically right. Try any means that you think would be workable to guarantee a correct writing. This semester we are going to post our writings not within our web course as we did last term, but in a public writing cyber space: the hudong.com, which means our readers might be international ones. So to show our respect to them, we need to write readably.

Each week, I will create a Wiki topic for you to publish your weekly writings there. http://www.hudong.com/

•You can easily find me there under the name “Deng sir”

You’ll have to

• write long enough so as to meet our requirements( usually no less than 150 words);

• paste your writing by clicking “reply” and using your virtual(cyber) name( better to be identical with what you use in our web course)[It is a good practice to edit your writing with some writing software to get rid of the simple errors before you decide to put it on the web];

• do peer evaluation and correction of at least one of your classmates’ writings.

We will try to make this stage as long as one or two months, and then we’ll move to our second stage when more attention will be directed to the linguistic form of what we write. We will try to use the words we have newly learned in the concerned passage.

And during the third stage, we will try to write uniquely and critically. We need to justify our writing[choice of topic, words and expressions, etc.], to show our own opinion, usually in disagreement with the writer's, the authority, and to attract more readers to our writing.
