释义

Today, I read the last part of the passage in Unit 1 which is between paragraph 11 and paragraph16.

In paragraph 11, there is a phrase ’reach out to’, it has two meanings. One is ‘to try to communicate with a person or a group of people, usually in order to help or involve them’. The other is ‘to offer help and support to someone’. Put the phrase in the sentence, it should mean ’try to communicate or make contact with people’

There are many new words, such as ‘fraternal’, ‘hunch’, ‘shackle’ and so on. ‘Fraternal’ means ‘(of twins) born from two eggs, not identical’ or ‘relating to brothers or like brothers’; ‘hunch’ means ‘an idea which is based on feeling and for which there is no proof’; ‘shackle’ is a  verb or a noun, when it is a verb, it means ‘prevent someone from acting or speaking freely; when it is a noun, it means ‘one of a pair of metal rings linked by a chain, used for fastening a prisoner’s wrists or ankles together’.

In paragraph 13, Jean-Paul Sartre said ‘Hell is other people.’ I don’t agree with him. In my opinion, friends are important. They can help me when I come across some problems. When I feel sad, I always talk with them. When I am happy, we can share happiness together.
