来自伯林顿的独立金属五人组Finger Eleven（十一指）早在高中时就成立了，开始叫做Rainbow Butt Monkeys（花屁股猴子）。最初成员为Scott Anderson（主唱）, Sean Anderson （贝司手），Rob Gommerman（鼓手）, and James Black（吉他手）和Rick Jackett（吉他手）。他们赢得当地电台举办的一个摇滚乐队竞赛，并用奖金录制了自己的第一张专辑《Letters from Chutney》。

随着Gommerman的离开，鼓手Rich Beddoe加入，乐队正式命名为Finger Eleven并且发行了专辑《Tip》，乐队的金属味更浓。在1998年9月专辑被美国纽约的唱片公司Wind-Up Records重新发行。这张专辑在Much Music（音乐录影带典礼）上也造成了不小的轰动，尤其是Above和Tip，扩大了他们在当地的知名度，但被美国人所熟悉还是在几年之后。Finger Eleven于2000年发行专辑《The Greyest of Blue Skies》，于2003年发行同名专辑《Finger Eleven》，单曲One Thing还打入排行榜前四十名。在一系列巡演后，他们开始制作下一张专辑，2007年5月的《Them vs. You vs. Me》使用了不同的乐器和音乐元素——包括舞曲、放克和乡村——而不是像过去那样仅仅是单纯的金属吉他演奏。后来乐队和Evanescence还有Chevelle同台进行演出。

当Finger Eleven风靡03年的emo "One Thing"成为乐队生涯的导向轴时，他们的事业急剧上升，引人注目。在那之前，人们对Finger Eleven的了解仅局限于"来自Burlington的男孩，常称自己是Rainbow Butt Monkeys"，而现在他们的慢摇滚在加拿大成为了白金歌曲，在美国也是金曲。所以对于这样一个乐队来说，如何应对只有一首歌获得广泛赞誉的尴尬局面。在此情况下，制作Them Vs. You Vs.
