What is bootvid.dll?

Windows Process Description:

The process bootvid.dll is the native module loaded during Windows 2000 startup in order to display graphical image on your computer. It is used to draw raw images without the Graphics Device Interface system. This DLL is also known as the VGA Boot Driver; thus, it is linked to video display adapters.

When Windows NT is installed, the boot loader provides for a VGA boot driver into the operating system with the bootvid.dll application. By default, Windows NT setup creates an entry in the boot.ini with the optional switch /basevideo. The bootvid.dll process displays this option in the menu as the VGA mode. Choosing this option will cause the system to use the bootvid.dll process, which should work with any VGA compliant display. In most cases, this will enable you to reboot and then fix an incorrect or improperly working display driver. You can also try and put the "/basevideo" switch at the end of the boot.ini after fastdect. This will boot the computer with the bootvid.dll file, or "/noguiboot" will boot to the CMD w/o loading the GUI.

Many things in Windows are disabled when running in Safe Mode. However, the module bootvid.dll allows Windows to be fully functional by running in VGA Mode. It gets the system into VGA mode the same way as Safe mode except you select "Enable VGA Mode" rather than "Safe Mode" on the startup menu. This process is selected if you are sure that your display adapter is the problem. If VGA mode cannot boot then you can try Safe mode that almost always boots.
