释义 | 作业14 When I read the fifth paragraph, I know the word “turn over” in the sentence “has an unusually low turn over among its employees.” means the rate at which workers are replaced, especially in a given period. And the word “push” in the dictionary means “to put a continuing force against (something) to cause it to move forward or away from you” but in the sentence “In many companies an atmosphere of constant push would inspire people to seek employment with less pressure somewhere else” means the pressure of circumstance, activities, etc. For example, “I can’t take city life any more. There’s too much push here for me.” In the last sentence, I found the author uses “to the best of their potential”, it means “as far as one can”, but I couldn’t understand why the author doesn’t use “do their best”. In the fifth paragraph, the author use the COMPAQ Computers as an example. From the example, I think we could know that today’s workers want meaning in their work and balance in their lives. They expect high respect for individuals and opportunities to expand their knowledge and experience; they also pay more attention to the labor policies and environmental awareness of companies. Companies should try to adapt to this change and meet their needs and expectation. |
