词条 | showing off 8 |
释义 | There is a sentence in paragraph 10, I think it is difficult to understand."and they'll even go stand on thier head if attention should flag". Two verbs on this sentence, "go" and "stand". Both "go" and "stand" are verbs. Why are two verbs putted together ? There are not other words between two verbs, and the word "stand" is not changed the form behand "go",why ? I think it is a informal structure. It means "go to stand on thier head". At here, "go" shows a condition. The author uses exaggeration to indicate that a showoff will do the most absurd things to attract attention. Literally it means if the audience gets tired of watching him, the showoff would even stand on his head. The content of paragraph 10 to 11 describes "narcisstic showoffs". The don't bother to compete, because they don't even notice there's anyone there to compete with. |
