词条 | unit 6-1 |
释义 | In my opinion, this article has 4 parts. Today, I analyze the first and second. Very few businesses today can survive without advertising of some kind. Even the smallest shop relies on the word-of- mouth advertising done by satisfied customers. Nowadays, no consumer can afford to remain ignorant of advertising practices. The paragraphs 1 and 2 are the first part. In first part, the author talk about many people are believes in their own immunity to advertising. And he also talks about a well-designed advertising campaign has dramatic effects. There is a word “consumer land” in this part. The word is an amusing term to describe the consumer society. The phrase “in habitants of consumer land” refers to the consumers. Ads designed to have an effect while being laughed at, belittled, and all but ignored. The phrase “all but” in the sentence means “all except”, “almost”. The last second sentence, it is understood difficult. I think it means a logical conclusion is that advertising, in unconscious way, has much effect on those who are unaware of it and even on those who believe in their immunity to whatever the advertisers say. The paragraphs 3 - 7 are the second part. The second part, author talks about advertising researching, purpose, and method. There is a word “attack” in the first second sentence of paragraph 3. It here means a vigorous attempt to persuade consumers to buy their products. Next sentence is long and difficult. We can find its expression in the book. Now I want to analyze the paragraph 6. There is a interesting word “ Alice-in-wonderland” in this paragraph. It is a fairy tales. Here reference is made to this children’s book because it is full of words which have absurd meanings. The use of “better” for “best” and “best” for “equal to” is equally absurd. Minute Maid Orange Juice is a brand name. Here “something other than competing brands” means something that is not in that product category. In the paragraph 7, the expression “the competition” is used to refer to the goods that a rival company is selling. There is a claim in this paragraph. “We will give you four miles per gallon more in your car than any other brand.” I think this claim means our gasoline will enable you to drive four miles farther for each gallon of gasoline in your car than any other brand. The paragraph 8 leads to the third part. |
