The fist sentence confuses me. I am not familiar with its meaning, because the sentence is so long. Based on analyzing the structure of the sentence, I get the meaning. Also I look up the NOTES of the text. Then the next sentence “A number of companies recently in the news know all too well the public impact of internal decisions” stops me. I am not familiar with “all too”, in my view, in this sentence, the expression “all too” is used to emphasize that something happens to a greater extent or degree than is pleasant or desirable. Then I go on reading the text, I find that I am interested in “a year of profits”. The expression “a year of profits” refers to a year during which the company made a profits. But why does the author not use “annual profits”, I think “annual profits” is better. By the way, the sentence of last but 4 line attracts me. I am confused by “within its own ranks”. In this sentence , I guess that the expression “within its own ranks” means within the company. |
