Jon Oliva和Criss Oliva两兄弟在佛罗里达组建了一个地下乐队Avatar 其他成员还包括 鼓手Steve Wacholz 贝司手Keith Collins 1982. Avatar为一张合集录制了两首作品 唱片公司是 Florida radio station WYNF 1983. Avatar发行了一张(EP)City Beneath The Surface 由于一些法律上的原因 Avatar将名字改成了Savatage 并且发行了他们的第一张专辑Sirens 1984. Savatage发行专辑The Dungeons Are Calling 然后与Atlantic Records签约 1985. Savatage发行他们在Atlantic的第一张专辑Power of the Night 然后乐队举行了第一次巡演 1986. 贝司手Johnny Lee Middleton 加入乐队 专辑Fight For The Rock发行 同时第一次去欧洲演出为Motorhead作暖场乐队 在一次演出当中与制作人Paul O'Neill相识 1987. Savatage与Dio和Megadeth举行了联合美国巡演 节奏吉他手Chris Caffery作为巡演嘉宾加入乐队 音乐录影带24 Hours Ago发行 然后参加MTV的着名节目 "Headbanger's Ball” 1989. Caffery正式加入Savatage 同时乐队的第六张专辑Gutter Ballet发行 1990. Savatage举行了为期9个月的世界巡演 参与的乐队还包括Testament和King Diamond.巡演结束后 Caffery离开了乐队 Savatage还录制了两首新的录影带"Gutter Ballet"和"When The Crowds Are Gone" 1991. 与O'Neill合作 Savatage录制了第一张摇滚歌剧Streets 同时拍摄了两首Video "Jesus Saves" 和 "New York City Don't Mean Nothing"但是只有前一首被发行 之后再一次举办世界巡演 1992. 由于越来越觉得力不从心 Jon Oliva决定放弃主唱的位置 专心于幕后制作和器乐演奏 Zachary Stevens正式成为乐队的新任主唱 1993.
