在1987年遇见彼得·杰克逊之前，沃尔士是一个电视剧作者和音乐家。和彼得·杰克逊在小成本的荒诞黑色电影《坏口味》中合作之后，他们又一同制作了疯狂怪诞的玩偶剧《疯狂肥宝综艺秀》。两人的怪异口味在这部影片中不谋而合，展示的淋漓尽致。随后沃尔士又参与了那部让彼得·杰克逊一炮而红的僵尸电影《群尸玩过界》剧本的编写。随之又合作了影片《天堂造物》，这部风格大变的严肃影片获得了当年的威尼斯电影节银狮奖和一项奥斯卡提名。这个疯狂的团队很快又转回了恐怖喜剧片的套路，但是这次的《恐怖幽灵》反响平平，不过好莱坞仍然垂青着他们，万众瞩目的《魔戒》三部曲给他们带来了空前的压力和同样巨大的成功，影片共获得了11项奥斯卡奖，而沃尔士不止参与了影片剧本的创作，更兼任制片，剪辑，助理导演等多个角色。
