《语言课程设计:教师指南》较全面地阐述了课程设计各个方面的内容,其中包括“评估需求”、“设立目标”、“开发教材”和通常较难定论的“表达理念”(即教师对于语言教学的信念)等章节。尽管《语言课程设计:教师指南》各章大多是按传统课程程序来排列的,但作者Kathleen Graves(美)还是在第一章内指出《语言课程设计:教师指南》是按系统来安排活动的。作者认为一个课程的各个部分都是相互关联、不可分割的整体,把这个整体称之为课程设计的“构架”。然而,“作为课程设计者,你可以从这构架中的任何地方开始你的课程,只要你认为从这里开始对你的课程是合理的即可”。因此,作者认为传统的课程设计被看成是一个十分有序的、线性的程序,而不像她自己在设计课程的过程中所经历的和大多数教师在现实工作中所经历到的那样“杂乱无章”。

所以这本书不一定按章节前后顺序来学习。作者在这本书中表达了自己对课程设计的想法,有些地方叙述较为详细,并引用了其他教师的评论和材料,意在启发教师评定这些观点,进而引发教师自己的意见。
