乔木、直立或攀援灌木，偶为草本。羽状复叶，小叶1至多数，全缘。总状花序或圆锥花序，顶生、腋生或与叶对生；雄蕊10枚，有时部分退化，离生或基部稍连合。荚果各样，不分节；种子肾形、椭圆形或球形，种脐小，稀为长种脐，顶生或侧生，脐沟明显，常被假种皮掩盖，胚根短，直或内弯；子叶不出土，有时具初生不育叶，或出土。

本族模式属：Sophora Linn.
