Varetta Dillard是1950年代未成名的最伟大的节奏蓝调大嗓门之一。她曾两次获得纽约阿波罗剧院业余比赛冠军，她曾录制单曲也与H-Bomb Ferguson组合成二重唱。1951年被Savoy公司签下，在第二年，她推出了单曲"Easy Easy Baby"以及她的主题曲"Mercy,Mr.Percy"。

Dillard为陨落的巨星唱颂歌而成名。她录制了纪念已逝歌星Johnny Ace的歌曲"Johnny Has Gone"，1955年被迫录制了纪念James Dean的歌曲"I Miss You Jimmy"，1956年转会成为RCA（美国广播唱片公司）旗下艺人。但她也私下继续为Triumph公司和MGM的子公司录制唱片，Dillard在1961年结束了她的单曲生涯并且在那时加入了他丈夫的福音唱诗班The Tri-Odds。在纽约哈林文艺复兴时代，Dillard因为骨骼缺陷而在医院度过了她的童年。她唱歌的起因是因为这是一种治疗的手段。
