释义

Carmel Valley Middle School, CVMS, is located in San Diego, California, in the neighborhood of Carmel Valley. The school is in the San Dieguito Union High School District, and it offers seventh and eighth grades.

The mission statement of the school is "to educate our students in a safe and challenging learning environment to become life-long learners who will be resourceful, responsible, and compassionate community members."[1]

CVMS's mascot is the flamingo, and school colors are green and pink. The current principal is Michael Grove, and the assistant principals are Desiree Manuel and Ryan Yee. The school has three counselors, Angie Miranda, Toni Zurcher, and Lisa Curry.[1]

Feeder schools for CVMS include Solana Pacific, Sage Canyon, Torrey Hills, Carmel Creek, Carmel Del Mar, and Ashley Falls Elementary Schools. Students from Carmel Valley usually go to nearby high schools Torrey Pines High School or Canyon Crest Academy.

Awards and Honors

Carmel Valley Middle School is a proud recipient of the California Distinguished School Award 2003. In 2007, the Carmel Valley Science Olympiad team received 1st place in the San Diego County Science Olympiad[2], winning against other schools like Black Mountain Middle School and Mesa Verde Middle School. In the school year of 2006-2007, Carmel Valley Middle School was recognized as the middle school with one of the highest test scores in San Diego County[citation needed].

Classes

In addition to the core subjects, electives offered include drama, music, computer, and art. Students can also learn Spanish or French, though only 8th graders are allowed to take French classes.

The school follows a block schedule, except for Mondays,on which students go through all six classes. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students go to periods 1,3,and 5, while they go to periods 2,4,and 6 on Wednesdays and Fridays. After lunch and just before the next class, students are given time to work on their homework during a homeroom period on Tuesdays and Thursdays. CVMS helps promote reading by setting aside time after lunch on Wednesdays and Fridays for SSR, or silent reading.

Clubs and extracurricular activities

Students in the school can participate in many extracurricular activities, such as Music, Science Olympiad, Independent PE, and sports in the neighboring Boys and Girls Club. One of the most popular clubs is Club LIVE!, which presents an anti-drug message while taking kids to movie nights, amusement parks and other fun activities. Academic clubs such as Math League and Math Counts also meet regularly. Most clubs meet at lunch or after school.

The ASB (Associated Student Body) helps with the school activities, such as school dance themes and spirit week ideas. ASB usually sets up music every Friday during lunch. The Bobcat News Network (BNN) is played every Monday and Friday, discussing upcoming school events, reminders, lunch clubs, and early lunch dismissals.
