剧情简介

麦特（汤姆威金森饰）和露丝（西西史派克饰）福勒夫妇是一对中年夫妻，他们居住在缅因州，感情融洽。麦特是镇上的医生，至于露丝则是镇上高中唱诗班的教师。尽管教授的乐团即将举行公演，但是露丝甚至她的丈夫麦特都无法专注，因为他们的儿子法兰克（尼克史塔饰），爱上了一个他们眼中不该爱的女人。

法兰克是个敏感的年轻人，毕业在即的他，有意继承祖父捕龙虾的事业，然而整个夏天，他都沈浸在与娜塔莉史托（玛丽莎托梅饰）的恋情里。麦特对孩子一向比较放任，反而露丝比较专断且爱发号施令，她认为娜塔莉不是理想的交往对象：比法兰克年长、教育程度不高，加上有两个小孩，社经地位糟糕、背景复杂，更重要的是，她和丈夫理察史托（威廉马波德）尚未正式离婚，只是分居，而且她丈夫在镇上可是来头不小、阴魂不散，有严重暴力倾向，攻击性强。

终于，理察找到了娜塔莉，也找上福勒全家。直到他的出现，一切事件急转直下，许多的回忆、创伤和冲突都被重新翻搅，也带来难以弥补的毁灭…

幕后制作

影片的真正主题是，弗兰克的父母怎样面对“白发人送黑发人”的家庭悲剧。影片对人物心理的把握不仅准确，而且极有层次感。开场铺垫及结局均有冗长之嫌，中间部分节奏虽慢，却内涵丰富。这部优秀家庭剧通过一场突如其来的家庭悲剧，揭示出平静水面下的波澜，并把感情的波澜融会在心理和社会的洪流中。影片的导演处理及表演风格均采取“低姿态”，所有戏剧元素都以克制为基调，因此高潮的迸发尤其具有冲击力。
