伊万·斯特沃特出生于爱丁堡，他的父亲是苏格兰著名的演员Andy Stewart。

Ewan第一次出现在电视屏幕上是参演一个关于苏格兰"Bluebell"比赛的宣传广告。

Ewan的妻子Clare Byam-Shaw也是一名英国演员，他们育有两个孩子，目前居住在伦敦。

对于中国的影迷，Ewan被熟知的角色当属《泰坦尼克号》中扮演的一副威廉·默多克。
