宋桂明于1996年和1999年在哈尔滨工业大学分别获材料学硕士和博士学位,2001年8月被聘为哈尔滨工业大学材料系副教授。2000年至2007年分别在中国地震局工程力学所、韩国KAIST材料界面实验室、荷兰金属研究所和荷兰代尔夫特工业大学材料系做博士后研究。2006年起从事高韧性三元陶瓷研究,2008年获得荷兰创新基金,从事自愈合陶瓷及陶瓷基复合材料和高温涂层的研究。2008年2月成为代尔夫特材料系永久研究员。目前指导博士后1名。迄今发表SCI学术论文40余篇,被SCI引用约200次。
