鲁伯特出生于一个演员世家，他的父母和弟弟都是演员。在伦敦Dulwich大学毕业后，鲁伯特进入了布里斯托尔的一所演员培训学校，但只读了2年就离开了。其后他在米兰和意大利做了一年半的走秀模特，才回到英国继续从事他的演艺事业。

他的妻子是爱尔兰演员Dervla Kirwan. 他们在2001年的一场演出《危险角落》中相识并相恋。2004年5月诞下他们的第一个女儿Florence，2年后儿子Peter出生。
