释义 | 41 I skim through the article of the in-class reading of Unit 4 from paragraph One to paragraph Eight. I find the article talks about the phenomena of cheating behaviors existing in schooners. When it comes to paragraph one, I am confused by the words “record sales”. Based on the analysis of the total sentence, I know “record sales” here is a noun. In my view, it refers to sales volume. But connected with the former sentences, I fail to know “record sales” stands for what. After reading the paragraph again and again, it occurs to me that the writer raises that although everyone is watching his weight, the streets are full of overweight folk. And what contributes to overweight? There is a word “snack food” reminding me. If someone always has junk food, his weight will sharply increase in the short time. Therefore, in my opinion, “record sales” here means dramatic or perfect sales volume. Why does the author delete the adjective? This question puzzles me. I discuss with my classmates and then make a conclusion that it is easy for readers to find out the relationship between overweight folk and snack-food industry. As a result, the author deletes the adjective in order to avoid verbose and common sense of people. Turning to paragraph two, the two prepositions of “but” and “and” appeal to me. I wonder to tell the difference between these two words behind two commas. I read the second sentence more carefully. Eventually, I find the two words “but” and “and” have close connection with the former short sentences. Focusing on “but”, whose former sentence talks about that the students admit they cheated when they were young. And they deny they would dream of cheating now in the following short sentence. What’s more, these two short sentences are of contrasts. For that reason, the author uses “but” to make a conjunction. As to “and”, I consider that the author hides a question: “is cheating a big problem at you schools?” the answer of the students is no. And it doesn’t conflict with the answer that they cheated when they were younger. So the writer applies the word “and”. In paragraph three, I find an interesting situation that there are three “of” after each comma. At the first, I consider them as run-on sentences. However, is such a kind of sentence allowed to appear in our text book? I reverse my surmise and continue analyzing the question. I discover that at the beginning of the second sentence is “it is a picture of …” There is anther “of”. So in actual, there are four “of”. So I think there are four short sentence beginning with “it is a picture of”. I discover the four pictures are describing more and more serious phenomena. I think the purpose of the author is emphasizing on the four pictures and four phenomena. He would like to alarm people to pay more attention to these situations. In paragraph seven, there are two words “pressure” and “values” attractive to me. I know the “pressure” refers to the pressure of getting into top college or graduate school. Why does the pressure changes into values? In my view, the expectations of parents of hoping children to become a high standard person drive children to get high marks. Owing to this, children feel so pressing that they cheat. These children gradually get into the habit of this living pattern. They constantly do anything to attain the goal. |
