词条 writing 42 for unit 4
释义

In the ninth paragraph, I feel puzzled when we read /was reading/the word ‘written’ after ‘offer’. In my opinion, the part ‘written by term-paper companies--or by other students--as their own’ is passive form as the additional explanation. That is to say the term-paper companies or other students write the papers for the students. Meanwhile, what is the meaning of ‘term-paper companies’? It is an interesting phrase to me. I haven’t found out the answer, and then I turn to the translation of this article, which tells me that it means ‘a kind of company which sells theses’.

In the tenth paragraph, I want to know what the parents’ and teachers’ attitudes are. We can find the answer in the following paragraph---no one seems much bothered about cheating in youngsters, anyway. From this paragraph and the eleventh paragraph, I get that this paragraph is to bring about the next paragraph.

At the beginning of Paragraph 11, the words ‘seems’ and ‘bothered’ puzzled me. And why does the author use ‘much’ as an adverb of ‘bothered’? From the dictionary, I find the word ‘seem’ that could link some adjective. For example, you seem very quiet today. And we could consider the word ‘bothered’ as an adjective. Then I stop at the words ‘a mother of a nursery schooler’. At first, I made a mistake that I read the ‘schooler’ as ‘school’, so I felt puzzled why the author cites a mother’s words who works for a nursery school. After I consult my classmates, I realize my mistake. The author uses the mother’s words whose child is studying in a nursery in order to tell us the common parents’ attitudes. The question ‘What if the cheating on games turns into cheating on tests?’ is challenging to be understood. In the beginning, I didn’t find out what the author wanted to ask. While I find the sentence structure of ‘if’, I think the author wants to ask the result of the condition---the cheating on games turns into cheating on tests. The phrase ‘lay a guilt trip’ draws my attention. From the reference, I summarize its meaning---‘punish’. In the last sentence of this part, the author uses three ‘too’ to reinforce tone. /这一段话事态要统一,过去时候与现在时/

What is the meaning of ‘honor code’ in Paragraph 12? In my opinion, the ‘honor’ means ‘a good character or a reputation for honesty and fair dealing’ here, but not ‘great respect for someone, or the feeling of pride and pleasure resulting when respect is shown to you’. Now I can guess that ‘honor code’ means ‘strict ethic’. In my view, the author cites the chairman of the honor committee in the twelfth paragraph in order to give an example of the most outspoken attitudes about cheating of youngsters. The last sentence of this part is very important in that it gives the source of these outspoken attitudes. From this, I realize the false mask of some people in the society. Meanwhile, I feel confused that why the author uses ‘critical’ before ‘of’. As we know, the word which is /去掉/before ‘of’ is a noun, but ‘critical’ is an adjective. I consult many books, but I don’t find out the answer. So I will /would like to是否更好/ask my NCE teacher.

Now, let’s turn to Paragraph 13. The word ‘dual’ lets me imagine its synonym---‘duplicate’. And furthermore, a problem appears in my brain/occurs to me/---why dose the author use ‘a dual purpose’ while the author cites two purposes of an approach. I think the phrase must be changed to ‘dual purposes’.

From Paragraph 13 to 14, the author tells about /talkes about/the open-book exams. And it is a good way to reduce the cheating rate.

In the fifteenth paragraph, the ‘sub’ of the word ‘sub-committee’ draws my attention. I am familiar with the meaning of ‘sub’---inferior and subsidiary. And ‘committee’ means ‘a group of people chosen from a larger group to act on or consider matters of a particular kind’. So we can image /suppose/the meaning of ‘sub-committee’. There are quotation marks to attract me. What is the function of the quotation marks after I know /have known/the meaning of the word ‘pedagogical’? Is it used as emphasis? I don’t /can't/make sure. From this paragraph, the students distort the purpose of exams. It is a learning tool, not the judgment of students’ learning level.

In the following paragraph, I find two relative words---‘academician’ and ‘academic’. From the online dictionary, I know they are different on /from or in/ meanings and word forms. At the same time, I feel curious the meaning of ‘academic dishonesty’. In the context, I guess it is equal to ‘cheating’. The last sentence is very complicate/-d/. I understand the meaning of it when I read it at the third time. But I don’t know what the function of ‘whether’. Maybe it is a part of the subject of the sentence ‘that is ever more elusive goal’. But it should be put after the first comma. Does the author make a mistake?

The last paragraph let me mention the last sentence of the fifteenth paragraph---exams can be used as a learning device.
