| 释义 | When I begin to read paragraph eight and paragraph nine, many new questions are rising in my mind. Have known what the employees are pursuing; let us turn to the management. In paragraph eight, the author talks something about the management polices of company. It is an important measure to evaluate the company for employees, investors, and costumers. These polices including how they deal with issues like ethnic diversity, harassment, hiring and firing, profit sharing, and others. I am attracted by the sentence “A number of companies recently in the news know all too well the public impact of internal decisions” in the next line. After reading some reference books, I get the meaning that many companies have learnt by experience that bad decisions on the part of management can create a negative impression on the public. In addition, the phrase “all too” can be used to stress that something happens to a greater extent or degree than is pleasant or desirable. In order to make the readers have a clear understanding, the author takes two examples to specify this issue. Both AT&T and Texaco Companies are failure to handle their internal problem, which lead to a bad effect to the public. In the ninth paragraph, the word “celebrating” interests me. This word means to praise someone or something. But why does the author use this word here? It seems that the whole paragraph tells us that the company putting a high value on differences among employees. When it comes to the example of Hearst Corporation, I am puzzled by some phrases. Such as “high-profile” and “printing presses”. Based on connecting the text, I get some views. Here, “high-profile” means receiving a lot of attention and interest from the publics. And the phrase “printing presses” maybe refers to machines used for printing. Form the Hearst Corporation does a series of things to their employees; we can see that it is a humanistic company. In my view, this is a good case for us to understand the paragraph well. This is my understanding from paragraph 8 to paragraph 9. |
