释义 | The title “weasel claim” of paragraph nine I feel very interesting, I think it is a metaphor; there is a phrase “weasel word”, it used instead of another word because it is ambiguous and misleading. And I found there are were two “that” in this first sentence, I know the meaning of contradict, is weasel word almost contradict the claim? But why the author says that? In the second sentence, I found another word” aptly”, it means suitably, appropriately, why the weasel word is suitable here? The reason is the action of the weasel. In paragraph ten, the title is attractive to me. As we all know that water is wet, however, why used here, is it a special meaning, I am eager to know. It is not unexpectedly, this claim is suitable common people and a statement of fact, but I don’t understand why use “over”, it means above something or cover something, so the former word is advantage and behind the word ”over” is competition, in my mind, there are different meaning, I am confused that why not charge the word “other advantages of product”. The paragraph eleven tells us “so what”, is it in order to show that we don’s think something that has been mentioned is important, I believe that the adman want our attention and some reflect to their products. In addition, why its advantage is not shared by other brands? And I have no idea which is other brands? In paragraph twelve the phrase of sort of appeal appealsto me, it explained when we are saying that something is true in some way, it is a informal word and an uncountable noun, therefore, the word” scientific proof and experiment is odd number. What is more, from this paragraph I know a new word”FTC”, it is an abbreviation of Federal Trade Commission. I wonder to know FTC wants to stop what? Is it this ad, but what the meaning of demanding? Paragraph thirteen talks about a kind of praise consumer, the word”compliment” is an expression of praise and admiration. Anther word “flatter” I never see it before this paragraph, I think it is a derogatory term, because it means to praise someone too much in order to please them. When I read the paragraph fourteen, I am puzzled the word “rhetorical”, I feel some familiar with the word”weasel”, there are some equal meaning. It refers to the phrase” rhetorical question”, as far as I am concerned, it is a kind of question that we ask as a way of making an impressive statement and without expecting an answer. I have some ideas in the last paragraph, firstly, I don’t know the phrase “peer into”, I look it up my dictionary, but it not present for me, just the meaning of peer, it is a kind of look, like glance or skim. Another difficulty is the last sentence; I know commercial is an objective, why it used here? |
