释义 | When it comes to paragraph 12 to 16,the first sentence in paragraph 12 stops me.[ I am confused by he first sentence in paragraph 12] There are two dashes in the sentence. Then some questions are rising in my mind. For example, what is the relationship between these two dashes? Why the author uses dashes here? In my view, these two dashes mean explanation here. Also it can connect the sentence well. What is more, in paragraph 13, the word “entitle” confuses me. So, I look it up in the dictionary, now, I know it means ‘give someone the right to do or have something’. Here, ‘-en’ means give, while ‘title’ refers to heading’. By knowing this interesting word, I think I can use it next time. Then, in the paragraph 14 the word of ‘that’s’ attracts me. Of course, I know its common meaning. However, in this situation, I cannot understand. After reading these paragraphs repeatedly, I finally get it. It refers to the sentence “sometimes folks achieve great things and nonetheless do not show off about it’. While, this is my first time to meet the word of ‘folks’, my teacher tells me it is more formal than people or person. In this sentence, it refers to the people who do not show off. In the paragraph 15, the author uses a sentence: “we are filled with admiration, with astonishment, with awe”. I think the author wants to emphasize her emotion. This is only my understanding of these five paragraphs. If I have more view of these paragraph I will tell you next time. |
