词条 unit4 9~17
释义

Today, I read the para.9 to 17 and I find it is worth reading because there are many obstacles.

Despite taking the precautions to try to cut down on the opportunity to cheat, students still seem to peek and crib. What attracted me is that some papers are written by team-paper companies. How fun! Team-paper Company! Is cheating really irresistible so that have such companies to help this dishonest action?

Hence, in the para.10, the author asked: “Is cheating human nature, or do parents and teachers encourage it by their own attitudes? It is a meaningful question and I wonder why the writer uses the word of “encourage”? With the doubt, I continue to read.

In the next two paragraphs, the author cites an example of a mother of a nursery schooler. In her opinion, cheating is too tempting, common and much a part of human nature therefore she can’t lay a guilt trip on a child as she did the same when she was his little boy age. In conclusion, parents seem little bothered about cheating in youngsters. Obviously, If they cheat in the exam, youngsters doesn’t feel shame on such dishonest incident.

Moreover, even the most outspoken opponents of cheating are less critical of youngsters. Quoting a chairman of the honor committee’s view, younger people must be allowed to make mistakes and he also admitted he cheated when he was younger. By the way, the phrase of “on the threshold of” bewilders me. Turning to the help with the reference books, I know here stands for at the beginning of a new and important event or development.

To solve the problem of cheating, Professors are tuning to open-book exam. This approach serves a dual purpose and maybe the Chinese education system should be reformed because in the elementary and high schools, most exams text students not more on how well they have learned to apply concepts but on how well they have memorized. What a pity! And in para.14.the dean of university gives the reason for the benefit of open-book exams.

I’m puzzled by the first sentence of para.15; I really don't understand the expression of “a campus-wide dialogue on the “pedagogical” goals of exams”. I read it again and again and discuss with my roommates. Then I know it refers to a campus-wide discussing between the professors and students what the role exams play on teaching methods. Although large extent academicians seem optimistic, teachers and child psychologist say that the only way to avoid academic dishonesty is cutting off the bud in high school. And another important way is that the root of the problem must be deal with in the home, even if it is an elusive goal---which means difficult to find, catch or achieve”---because two-income-family and high-pressure jobs are prevalent in today’s society. So parents should not abdicate the responsibilities and let their children make occasional failure (in exams) an unthreatening prospect, they just need work more diligent.

The aim of our education system is teaching our students to be integrity and honest not telling lies or cheating.
