词条 unit 6-2
释义

I analyze the first and second parts. Today, I will analyze the third and forth parts. The third part is from the paragraph 8 to paragraph 14. This part is the main part in the artier. The author talks about the six kinds of the advertising claims in this part. And the last paragraph is the last part. This is a summer in the artier. The author talks about commercials are working on you. Advertising greatly promotes sales. And in their efforts to tell people about products and events, advertisers provide us with great amount of the latest information. Radio, television and computer have made it possible for advertisers to attract the attention of millions of people. Therefore, it has become part of our daily life. Meanwhile, to make an advertisement,a lot of people will work together on it. So with the development of advertising a lot of jobs are being provided. Advertising is an important business.

In the paragraph 9, there is a sentence which is understood difficult. “Upon closer examination, the egg is discovered to be hollow.” Here “upon” means “一…就…”. So in my opinion, this sentence means when one examines the egg carefully, he will find the egg hollow. In next sentence, there is a word “on” is very interesting. I think it means “at the time of”. The paragraph 10 has a sentence “Made from grains and water as are other beers.” I think it omits two words “It is” or “Rheingold is”. So the complete sentence should be: Rheingold is made from grains and water as are other beers. In the paragraph 11, the claim “so what” is used to show that you do not think something that has been mentioned is important. There is a short sentence "But is it twice as beneficial to the body?" in this paragraph. I think the complete question would be: But is it twice as beneficial to the body as ordinary supplements are? In the structure “as…as”, the second part of the structure is omitted if you have already mentioned the thing to which you are comparing the amount, measurement or degree. There is a difficult sentence in the paragraph 12. “Even the weasel ‘helps’ did not prevent FTC from demanding that this ad be withdrawn.” This sentence means although the word “help” is fairly vague, the FTC considered that the claim was precise enough to be called a false claim and this ad had to be withdrawn. And the next sentence means we ought to see to it that the claim is far more believable if the number “twelve” is used than if it were not used. Here “it” refers to the number “12”. So the after half part means if the number “12” were taken out, the claim would be less believable. The last sentence of the last part, it is a long sentence. The second sentence omits a word “you”. And this sentence means although you try to avoid seeing ads, for example, looking into the refrigerator when ads are broadcast on TV, or closing your eyes when you drive past billboards, ads would affect on you all the time.
