因垂体前叶分泌的生长激素不足而导致儿童生长发育障碍，身材矮小者称为生长激素缺乏症。

原发性生长激素缺乏症多见于男孩，患儿出生时身高体重正常，数周后出现生长发育迟缓，2-3岁后逐渐明显，其外观明显小于实际年龄，但身体各部位比例尚匀称，智能发育亦正常。身高低于同年龄正常儿童30%以上。随年龄增长可出现第二性征缺乏和性器官发育不良。继发性生长激素缺乏症可发生于任何年龄，除有上述症状外，尚有原发病的种种症状和体征。本病一旦确诊，应尽早使用生长激素替代治疗，开始治疗年龄愈小，效果愈好。目前已广泛使用的有国产基因重组人生长激素。
