皮克斯通(John V．Pickstone)，出生于英国伯恩利。先学生理学，后在伦敦切尔西学院获得哲学博士学位。博士论文研究法国19世纪早期的普通生理学。在美国明尼苏达大学两年之后，于1974年到英国曼彻斯特大学研究医院史。1986年，他创建了曼彻斯特大学科学、技术和医学史中心，现为该中心韦尔科姆研究教授。其著作广泛涉及生物医学科学史、英国科学和医学的社会史及卫生保健和医疗技术的近期历史。

著有：《医学与工业社会：曼彻斯特及其地区1752—1946年的医院发展史》(1985年)、《从历史角度看医学革新》(1992年，编者、撰稿者)、《二十世纪医学指南》(2000年，与Roger Cooter合编并撰稿)、《认识方式——一种新的科学、技术和医学史》(2000年)、《外科医生、制造商与患者——大西洋彼岸全髋关节置换史》(2007年，与Julie Anderson、Francis Neary合著)。
