童金南，男，1962年5月生，博士、教授、博士生导师。国家杰出青年基金获得者。

1978年9月-1982年7月，原武汉地质学院地层古生物学专业本科学习，获学士学位。1982年9月-1985年7月，中国地质大学（武汉）古生物学和地层学专业研究生学习，获硕士学位。1987年9月-1991年12月，中国地质大学（武汉）古生物学和地层学专业在职博士研究生学习，获理学博士学位。1985年7月至今，中国地质大学（武汉）任教（1996年12月在原地质矿产部破格晋升为教授，1999年12月评为博士生导师）。1994年10月-12月，1997年11月-1998年1月，1998年11月-1999年2月分别在美国Smithsonian研究所、澳大利亚Deakin大学和美国Arizona大学进行科学访问和合作研究。

现任国际地层委员会三叠系分会选举委员、国际地质对比规划IGCP-467项co-leader、中国古生物学会常务理事、中国古生物学会教育与普及委员会副主任兼秘书长、全国地层委员会三叠系专业组和定量地层专业组委员。

长期致力于二叠系―三叠系界线地质学和三叠纪地层学和古生物学方面的研究工作，近年来主攻二叠系―三叠系界线和下三叠统印度阶―奥伦尼克阶界线层型（“金钉子”）及古生代末大灭绝后三叠纪初的生态系复苏。已发表科研论文80余篇，15篇论文被SCI收录，出版专著和主编文集7部，在国外出版专著2部。获国家自然科学二等奖1项、湖北省自然科学一等奖2项、国土资源部科技一等奖1项。
