马丁·兰道1931年6月20日生于美国纽约布鲁克林。曾担任过《纽约每日新闻报》的漫画家，后进入纽约演员工作室学习表演。1959年首次登上银幕，即在悬念大师希区柯克的名片《西北偏北》中担任配角。随后出演的几部影片，虽多以反派角色为主，但已初露锋芒。

1966年至1969年马丁·兰道以热门电视系列剧《不可能的任务》(1996年由汤姆·克鲁斯搬上大银幕)中扮演的千面人一角而广受欢迎。进入70年代事业渐走下坡，曾一度接不到任何角色，无奈转行担任戏剧教师，垫伏了十年之后，终于卷土重来。以1988年的《塔克：其人其梦》及1989年的《爱与罪》两度荣获奥斯卡最佳男配角奖提名，1995年已64岁高龄的他终以《艾德伍德》夺得了奥斯卡最佳男配角奖。再创演艺事业高峰。2001年在吉姆·凯瑞与达拉邦特合作推出的《堂皇》中，亦有令人称道的表现。1957年与Barbara Bain结婚，育有二女，1993年离婚。
