在战后时期，扎夫特“second stage”的高级机动战士高达面世。其中一种设计就是高速可变形的ZGMF-X23S Saviour Gundam。与其他高达一样，Saviour Gundam也装备了能抵御实弹攻击的PS装甲。因为尤尼奥斯禁止了反中子干扰器的使用，扎夫特顺应时势开发了氘核光束供电系统，使机体能在战场上通过接收母舰发出光束而达到充电的目的。变形为MA模式后，Saviour Gundam在宇宙和大气圈内都有相当的速度和机动型。另外，在MS和MA模式，Saviour Gundam都装备了多种武器，主要的武器是一对能在两种模式使用的“Amfortas”等离子光束炮，其余的武器包括光束炮、光束步枪、巴尔干炮和光束剑。

地球联合军和扎夫特在C.E.73年10月开始了新的战争后，扎夫特最高评议会议长基尔伯特?杜朗艾尔将Saviour Gundam分配给重新加入扎夫特并成为FAITH（Fast Acting Integrated Tactical Headquarters）的阿斯兰?萨拉。杜朗艾尔给予阿斯兰在适当的时候纠正扎夫特的自由，并请求他与密涅瓦会合并使该舰扮演上次大战中大天使号的角色。在与奥布军的短暂交战后，阿斯兰在扎夫特的卡潘塔利亚基地与密涅瓦会合并参加了印度洋和中东的战斗。
