理查德·德莱弗斯父亲是纽约的律师，9岁时他们全家迁居至洛杉矶，他大学只念了一年便到医院当职员，在60年代后期至70年代初到处流浪寻找各种演出机会。默默无闻的他早在1967年便出现在《毕业生》（The Graduate，1967）等片中，直至出演了1973年的《美国风情画》（American Graffiti，1973）才崭露头角。1975年，他参演了史蒂芬·斯皮尔伯格（Steven Spielberg）导演、轰动一时的影片《大白鲨》（Jaws，1975），本人也跟着人气急升，两年后，他出演了斯皮尔伯格导演的另一部重要影片《第三类接触》（Close Encounters of the Third Kind，1977）。同年，在《再见女郎》（The Goodbye Girl，1977）中的表演令他以黑马姿态勇夺奥斯卡影帝宝座，跃登巨星之列。他在其后的20多年中继续主演过多部影片，以《生命因你而动听》（Mr. Holland's Opus，1995）再创表演事业的高潮。
