释义 | The "modifier" in the sentence of paragraph 9 is a word used to explain something in detail or more clearly. But weasel is a kind of animal, what's the relationship between "weasel" and "word"? Why the "weasel claim" is a modifier in English "almost contradicts..." seems a little difficult to understand, while I believe it should be the sentence like this "almost weasels words contradicts...". The second sentence in this paragraph, I think it is written to explain the origin of the "weasel word". "suck out" means drink something with your mouth by power. The last sentence of this paragraph is so hard to understand for me. Secondly, "meaninglessness" here means "in signification", lack of meaninglessness. While there is another word "hollow" in front of "meaninglessness". Is that change to the opposite meaning if they are put together? So I referred to my reference book. In paragraph11, the phrase "react to" made me puzzled. Then I got its meaning which is "respond to" by looking up in dictionary. In paragraph 12, the sentence "even the weasel 'helps' did not prevent the FTC...withdrawn" shows its difficulty in understanding. I have to appeal to my reference book from which I got to know the meaning. I reorganizes this sentence like this "the ads is asked to be withdrawn by FTC even the weasel 'help'". The "FTC" here means Federal Trade Commission. The word "rhetorical" in the fourteenth paragraph is a new word for me and I don't know what it meaning as exactly. While it doesn't matter because I believe there must be sentences or examples offered to comprehend the meaning of "rhetorical question".The phrase "peer into" in the last paragraph means "watch" or "glance at". "billboard" is a board on which there are ads put by "commercial companies". "commercials" in the last line of this paragraph is a noun which has the same meaning as "ads". After have finished my reading of this article, I got some thinking of it. Firstly, I really got my knowledge increased during my reading. There are so many kinds of advertising claims and each of them has their own effect. Secondly--the influence of ads in our daily live. Although I am agree that the ads would have effect on people's purchasing behavior, I've never noticed the ads have been so sensitive, I mean, it has been becoming more and more maturity. Now, you can find ads in everything and everywhere in the earth. Some ads even have been advertised to universal space by rocket. Thirdly, ahh...It seems rather interesting. If you say that you like ads very much (which rarely happens), you are affected by ads and buy the products. Ok, if you say that you don't like ads at all, then you are also affected by ads! |
