释义 | The article talks about that advertisement influence on human and how we should analysis the advertising claim in paragraph 1 to 8. Though many people are believers in their immunity to advertising, the author of the essay thinks that, a well—designed advertising words below the level of conscious awareness and even works on those who claim immunity to its message. Through an analysis of the language of the advertising claim, the author found that most ads balance on the narrow line between truth and falsehood by a careful choice of words and then influence peoples; mind in subconscious way. This is very long section, I found many trouble. In the first paragraph “these naïve inhabitants of consumer land” in here, there are two nouns, so which is the subject? I think “consumerland” is the subject, but why use “inhabitants”, it seem no more meanings. Then I found a difficult sentence “their own purchases,…………supporting role”. I cannot understand its meaning, whether “purchases” is the subject? Consequently, it is said “few people admit to being greatly influenced by ads”. My question is that why people aren’t willing admit. In my opinion, it means nothing. In other word, if I did, I don’t think I’m a stupid man. Someone think that we are not fool enough to believe in such trash. This is why the reason. Anyway different people hold different view. I also agree with the author that advertising works below the level of conscious awareness, we cannot control because we don’t know when and where influenced by it. When I read paragraph 3, there is a sentence confused me. “a person unaware…………adman’s attack” I look for anther book, it could write that a person is unaware advertising’s influence on him and such person is most vulnerable to the adman’s attach. I don’t know the composition of sentence very well. So I still have issue. However, I got anther problem when I read paragraph 5 line 1. It is said “those in which all or most of the brands” I could not found what does the “those” point out. Furthermore, I found a very funny word “ Alice-in-wonderland”, though I look for the dictionary, there is no answer. In my part, advertisement play a very important role, I can’t ignore its advantage. We can know the new product by advertisement, and adapt ourselves to world trends. But everything has pros and cons, sales agent exaggerate purposely the product for the sales volume. We cannot unchecked trust the advertisement. |
