词条 1-3 unit3
释义

This time, I am going to read the first three paragraphs in unit three.

In reading Paragraph one, I find there are two new words that I have never seen before. They are “authoritarian” and “dehumanizing” in the first sentence. By looking them up in the dictionary, I know the former means disapproving demanding total obedience and refusing to allow people freedom to act as they wish. The other word “dehumanizing” is the adjective of “dehumanize”, which refers to “to remove from (a person) the special human qualities of independent thought, feeling for other people. Simply speaking, it can be explained as to deprive of human quality. What does the author want to express from this sentence? “Today’s worker is no longer willing to work in an authoritarian and dehumanizing environment.” The phrase “is no longer willing to” has the hint that yesterday’s worker has the willing to work in that environment, no matter what the reason is. Maybe they are helpless because of the pressure of living, maybe they are not educated a lot so that they will not consider so much thus they don’t have the mind to resist at that time. But from the following sentences, we know everything is changed. Workers are no longer weak and incompetent. They are not working machines any more but the human being with high pursuit. They want meaning, equality, respect, satisfaction and even more.

Paragraph two tells us how the company does can help make work more meaningful.

When I read Paragraph three, some places attract my attention. The first one is the first sentence “Repetitive factory routines and office work that simply move paper from in-box to out-box are mindless tasks.” In my opinion, it is an appositive clause. “Simply move paper from in-box to out-box” is just the “office work” referred in front. But what explains(the explanation) in the relative book is not the same as what I think(thought), in which it says it is an attribute clause. I tried to understand it, but it was in vain. Another place interested me is the word “as” in the sentence “too little challenge in the work, as in completely automated tasks…”what is this “as” used for? Here “as” is used to introduce an example or further instance of something in order to help explain a particular point or idea. The last sentence says “thus success or achievement in reaching an accepted standard of competence is an important factor in job satisfaction.” What does the “accepted standard” mean? According to the paragraph, it refers to do some jobs that do not have too little challenge, at same time, they should not too hard too(to) do. The best way is that the job should be suitable for the workers’ abilities.

GOOD WRITING!
